Women's Soccer Adds Eight to 2013 Roster
Feb. 8, 2013
CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's soccer team would like to welcome eight new faces to the 2013 women's soccer roster as announced by head coach Woody Sherwood. Celeste Carlson (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), Tori Doss (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Ellie Eckerle (Villa Hills, Ky./Notre Dame), Maggie Hare (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), Maddy John (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Erika LaRosa (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton), Erin Lattimer (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) and Rachel Piccus (Solon, Ohio/Laurel) will be joining the Musketeers' roster this coming fall.
"We are really excited about this recruiting class," mentioned Sherwood. "We feel that each year we have been here we have brought in good players who are willing to work to develop to the level we need in order to compete for a conference championship. This class is no different. There is an exciting blend of players in this group, which is heavy in attacking personalities. It's no secret that we have had trouble scoring goals the past two seasons and continue to look to blend quality returners with incoming freshmen in order to remedy that. Provided this class is willing to put the work in preparing for preseason, several should find themselves in the mix for playing time right away. We welcome the class of 2017 to our Xavier Family!"
Carlson, a midfielder at Maine South High School and Park Ridge, Ill., native, was named the 2011 ODP Region II Pool and the State Team. She was also named the 2010 and 2011 High School Assists Leader. Carlson plays her club soccer with Eclipse Select who were named the Premier MRL Champion and the Disney Showcase Champion in 2010.
"Celeste was a product of our ID camps," commented Sherwood. "We had heard about her tenacious defending. Pound-for-pound she is one of the hardest tacklers we have seen. She will bring a new dimension to our team in how she competes and plays the game."
Doss, a midfielder at Carmel High School in Carmel, Ind., helped lead her team to a 2011 Indiana High School State Championship and a No. 31 national ranking. She led Carmel in scoring and points in 2011 and was named to the NSCAA All-Region Team. In 2012, Doss served her team as a captain and earned recognition as a NSCAA High School All-American and Scholar All-American. She played club ball with Carmel United, earning six Indiana State Championships and the 2011 ECNL B National Champions.
"We were fortunate to have Tori join us in January," Sherwood said. "Getting the opportunity to train and play in games this spring will be invaluable experience for her come August. She was one of the top players in the state of Indiana and will be a great addition to the cast of attackers we currently have and have coming in."
Eckerle, a native of Villa Hills, Ky., and forward at Notre Dame Academy, led her team in scoring her senior season and finished in the top-15 in scoring in Northern Kentucky the past three seasons: #12 2010, #10 2011 and #7 in 2012. A team captain her senior season, Eckerle helped lead her team to the squad's second consecutive appearance in the Kentucky High School State Championship match (2011 Champions, 2012 Runners-Up) and she was named the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Most Outstanding Player and First Team All-Northern Kentucky. She played her club ball with Classics Hammer/Kings.
"We first saw Ellie as a high school sophomore when she attended our ID camp," Sherwood commented." By the end of the day she had separated herself from most of the other campers in terms of her sheer competitiveness, physical play and desire to get goals any way she could. We anticipate her having an opportunity to compete for playing time up top for us."
Hare attends Lakota West in West Chester, Ohio, and was a four-year varsity starter at midfield for the Redbirds. She was named the team's MVP and served as a team captain this past season. Hare earned mention on the 2009, '11 and '12 First Team All-GMC and on the 2010 Second Team All-GMC in addition to being named All-Southwest Honorable Mention in 2011 and '12. She was also honored with the All-Academic Award four-straight seasons. Hare played club soccer with Cincinnati United Premier.
"Maggie is another player in this 2013 class who is technically refined beyond most high school players," noted Sherwood. "She has a wonderful touch with the ball and very good vision. We look for her to strengthen our midfield right away."
John, a Sagamore Hills, Ohio, native, played her prep career at Walsh Jesuit. The midfielder helped lead her team to the 2012 Ohio State Title and was named a 2012 North Coast League Second Team All-Star. Hare also earned Honorable Mention North Coast League All-Star accolades while also serving as a member of the National Honor Society throughout high school. She was a member of the Cleveland Internationals club team, the 2010 and 2011 Midwest Regional League Champions.
"Maddy is a versatile attacking player who is smooth on the ball and can score goals in bunches," said Sherwood. "Her technical ability will allow her a seamless transition to our style of play as we continue to become a better possession team."
LaRosa, a four-year varsity starter in midfield at Seton high School and Cincinnati native, served as team captain in 2011 and 2012, helping to lead her team to the 2012 District Championship. She was named First Team All-Conference and All-City in 2011 and 2012 and earned mention on the All-Conference Second Team in 2010. Recently, LaRosa was awarded the Senior Excellence Award from the NSCAA for her contributions to the Seton soccer team. LaRosa was also a member of the 2008-12 ODP State Team. She played her club ball with Classics Hammer/Kings alongside Ellie Eckerle.
"Erika epitomizes what Xavier athletics is about," Sherwood commented. "She has a great commitment to soccer and academics as well as a sincere interest in service to her community. From a soccer standpoint, she has all the tools to have success at the collegiate level. We anticipate her playing in the midfield but Erika is versatile enough to be able to help the program at several positions."
Lattimer was a four-year varsity team member, working in goal for Fishers High School in Fishers, Ind. She was on the Indiana State ODP team and played club soccer with Carmel United. Lattimer helped lead her club squad to the 2011 Midwest Regional League Championship and the Indiana State Cup Finals.
"We found Erin through our ID camp as well after she impressed us and our goalkeeper coach in 2011," Sherwood explained. " She has a solid foundation on which to build, a good GK frame and is extremely coachable and motivated to excel in our program."
Piccus, a 2012 team captain at Laurel School, hails from Solon, Ohio, and played her prep career in goal for the Gators, the 2011 Ohio High School State Runners-Up. She played club soccer with the Cleveland FC, winning the 2010 State Cup Championship and finishing as runners-up in the 2011 and 2012 State Cup.
"Rachel brings a high level of youth soccer experience with her," Sherwood said. "She has played significant minutes in a lot of major games which have prepared her to step into the DI collegiate goalkeeping environment. A quick, fundamentally sound keeper, she will add to a quality group of three goalkeepers next fall"
