Women's Soccer Team Records 2-0 Shutout Win At Creighton In Season Finale
Nov. 2, 2013
OMAHA, Neb. – The Xavier University women’s soccer team captured a 2-0 win in the season finale at Creighton today. The win gives Xavier, 9-8-1, its first winning season since 2005.
“This is an incredible win to do it on Senior Day at Creighton, “ said head coach Woody Sherwood, “to assure the first winning season for Xavier women’s soccer since 2005. To accomplish what we did with our rigorous non-conference schedule and playing in one of the best soccer conferences in the country is a credit to our seniors. I give a lot of credit to all of our seniors who put us in a position to do what we did today. We truly have laid the foundation for the future and we have learned a lot from our first season in the BIG EAST Conference.”
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in a first-half defensive struggle. In fact, the score remained 0-0 until the 71st minute. That’s when XU scored the first of two goals in a five-minute span to take control of the match.
Freshman Tori Doss scored her fourth goal of the season unassisted at 70:14 to put XU up 1-0. Appropriately a pair of Musketeer seniors combined for the second goal at 74:48. Mariah Whitaker took a pass from Ashton Green and finished from seven yards out. It marked Whitaker’s fourth goal of the season as well, tying her with Doss for the team lead for the season.
Creighton finished the season 9-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the BIG EAST Conference. XU finished 2-7 in its first season in the BIG EAST.
