CINCINNATI -- Junior defender Brett Sweeney scored her first career goal in the 85th minute to give Xavier a 1-0 win over Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis on Senior Day. Prior to the game, Xavier honored seniors Andi Meyer, Jessica Brooks, and Melanie McLaughlin and juniors Chelsea Burns and Leslie Boersma.
"I was frustrated with our play in the first half," said XU head coach Woody Sherwood. "I think we played way too many balls to Saint Louis. At halftime we changed formations and asked our players to make an effort to connect more passes and stop giving the ball away unnecessarily. The second half was much better from that standpoint. All year long we have talked about one goal games being decided by free kicks. Finishing the season with a win and a goal off of a corner kick was definitely rewarding. I'm sure we have the school record for one goal games after playing every team on our schedule to a goal except LaSalle. It really shows how far this program has come in terms of being in every game we play and competing at a national level."
Sweeney gave XU (7-8-3, 2-5-2 A-10) the win when she finished a corner kick from sophomore Mariah Whitaker. The corner kick earned Whitaker her second assist of the season. Junior Leslie Twehues led the Musketeers with three shots while seniors Brooks and McLaughlin, and junior Boersma each posted one shot.
Freshman goalkeeper Katie Markesbery was credited with the win for the Musketeers with two saves in 77 minutes while junior Jennifer Peri earned two saves in 13 minutes.
With the loss, Saint Louis fell to 5-10-3 overall and 3-5-1 in the A-10.
