CINCINNATI -- The Xavier women's soccer team put up a strong defensive effort against Charlotte Friday night at the XU Soccer Complex, but in the end, it was the 49ers who earned the 1-0 win. With the loss, the Musketeers fell to 6-8-3 overall and 1-5-2 in the Atlantic 10 while Charlotte improved 7-8-4 overall and 4-3-1 in the A-10.
"That Charlotte team was one of the better teams we have seen this year," said XU head coach Woody Sherwood. "They were very athletic and had some good soccer players. That said, we gave ourselves a chance by defending well and only allowing a few dangerous chances. We had the best chance of the game for either team at the end, and probably should have finished it to take the game to overtime. We will regroup and try to close out the season on a positive note Sunday"
Charlotte took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute when Macky Wingo scored the lone goal of the match with a shot that got past XU goalkeeper Katie Markesbery.
XU had several chances in the waning minutes including a good look from senior Jessica Brooks. Markesbery finished the game with 11 saves.
Xavier will close out the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Musketeers host Saint Louis. Sunday's game will honor this season's graduating class.
