Women's Soccer Team Drops A Tough One To DePaul On Senior Day
Oct. 26, 2013
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women’s soccer team lost a tough 1-0 decision this afternoon to DePaul on Senior Day at the Xavier Soccer Complex despite controlling the action almost the entire afternoon.
“That was a tough way to lose, missing a penalty kick and giving up an own goal, after playing such good soccer,” said head coach Woody Sherwood. “To outplay a very good DePaul team who is third in the BIG EAST was tremendous. We just left too many goals on the field today and were punished for not putting the game away in the first half like we could have.”
The statistics supported the Xavier’s domination of the match as XU outshot DePaul 13-4, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Xavier had several dangerous chances but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Xavier’s first opportunity came just one minute into the match as the Musketeers were awarded a penalty kick after a DePaul foul in the box. Laura Rao’s penalty kick hit the left post and XU’s first big chance didn’t produce a goal.
The two teams went to the locker room tied at 0-0 at halftime. In fact, the match remained scoreless until almost 55 minutes expired off the clock. That’s when DePaul caught a break on a goal that somehow found its way past the line.
The loss dropped XU to 8-8-1 overall and 1-7 in the BIG EAST Conference. DePaul raised its records to 11-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Xavier closes out the 2013 season next Saturday afternoon at Creighton.
