71st Minute Goal Lifts VCU Over Women's Soccer
Oct. 26, 2012
CINCINNATI - With a corner-kick goal in the 71st minute, the visiting VCU Rams bested the Xavier women's soccer team Friday night at the XU Soccer Complex. The Musketeers will close out the regular season at home Sunday against Richmond.
VCU (11-4-3, 6-2-0 A-10) got the game-winner off a Musketeer own goal. Cristin Granados was awarded the score after crossing in the ball from a corner kick.
"Congratulations to VCU," commented head coach Woody Sherwood. "They showed they are one of the better teams in the conference. Certainly is a tough way to lose on an own goal but that was our gutsiest effort of the year. We played some of the most attractive, intelligent soccer that we've seen all year. It's a great way to go into ending the final weekend of our 2012 season. If we can repeat that Sunday, we'll have another great opportunity to impress the Xavier faithful."
Junior Taylor Dearbaugh fired off four shots to lead the Musketeers, with three of those on goal. As a team, Xavier (6-11-1, 1-7-0 A-10) tallied nine total shots including two apiece from senior Leslie Twehues and junior Mariah Whitaker.
The Rams recorded 11 shots on the night and took six corner kicks to the Musketeers' three. Granados had two shots on the night as did three other Rams.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Markesbery (6-11-1) was charged with the loss after working 90 minutes between the posts for the Musketeers. She tallied five saves to one goal against.
Kristin Carden (10-4-2) was awarded the win for VCU. She also recorded five saves to zero goals against in 90 minutes of action in goal.
XU will be recognizing four senior team members before Sunday's regular season finale. The Musketeers and Spiders will kick off at 1 p.m.
