Short-Handed Women's Team Soccer Loses On A Rainy Night At Fordham
Oct. 26, 2007
BRONX, NY - The short-handed Xavier Musketeer women's soccer team lost 3-1 on a cold and rainy Friday night at After a slow start in the first half Xavier controlled most of the action for the final 30 minutes before intermission. The Musketeers scored the only goal of the first half in the match's 35th minute. Junior Sara Schmidt took a cross from senior Karin Martini and drilled it into the right side of the goal. It marked Schmidt's first goal and Gerard's first assist of the season. Xavier led 1-0 at halftime. The Musketeers appeared to go up 2-0 in the 56th minute when sophomore Brittany Green beat the Fordham defense. The referee signaled goal but, after a long delay, the referee changed his decision and decided no goal and a Xavier foul. The score remained XU 1-0. The bizarre nature of the second half continued as a couple minutes later XU sophomore Lauren Nutini was called for a red card after retaliating against a Fordham player. XU still led 1-0 with 32:32 left but would have to play the remainder of the match a man down. Fordham got the game-tying goal from Katie Sanchez in the 65th minute. The Rams went up for good when Alexis Ribadeneyra scored at 78:28. FU added an insurance goal from Courtney Fedge at 85:19. Fordham raised its records to 5-1-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 7-5-3 overall, while XU fell to 3-6-1 in the A-10 and 4-13-1 overall. The Musketeers close out the 2007 season on Sunday with a noon match at
