Women's Soccer Fights Saint Joseph's To 1-1 Tie
Oct. 23, 2011
CINCINNATI -- In its seventh overtime game of the season, the Xavier women's soccer team battled Saint Joseph's to a 1-1 draw in Atlantic 10 Conference play Sunday afternoon at the XU Soccer Complex. Senior forward Jessica Brooks scored the equalizer for the Musketeers in the 72nd minute.
"It was another competitive A-10 match for us today," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "Unfortunately, we left a couple of goals on the field. We created three of our best opportunities of the year only to lose some composure on the finish. I thought we were once again very organized and had some very nice combination play in the attacking half of the field. The effort was great today and we will need to bring that again next weekend"
Saint Joseph's (6-6-5, 1-3-3 A-10) took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute when Jennifer Pfieffer hit a goal from the middle of the XU penalty box.
The Musketeers (6-7-3, 1-4-2 A-10) equalized in the 72nd minute when sophomore Mariah Whitaker passed the ball forward to junior Leslie Twehues who made a strong cross from the Saint Joseph's end line. Brooks was there to make a sliding strike that made its way into the goal.
With the overtime game, the Musketeers tied a school record of seven overtime contests in a season that was set in 2006.
The Musketeers round out regular season play next weekend. XU hosts Charlotte, Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. XU closes out the regular season Sunday, October 30 at 1 p.m. as they host Saint Louis on Senior Day.
