CINCINNATI -- The Xavier women's soccer team picked up a crucial Atlantic 10 Conference win Friday night as the Musketeers downed Temple 1-0. Sophomore Mariah Whitakerscored Xavier's lone goal and helped the Musketeers remain unbeaten at home.
"We spent the week working on set pieces so it was very rewarding to get the game-winner from one," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "Temple proved to be organized and very hard to break down. Once again, we were pretty good defensively and didn't allow many chances. We got some good minutes from a lot of players today which will hopefully help our legs with the Sunday match against a very dangerous Saint Joseph's team."
Whitaker's goal came in the 74th minute when the sophomore finished a well-placed free kick into the penalty box from fellow sophomore Lauren Heap. For Whitaker the score marked her second goal of the season while Heap earned her third assist on the season.
With the win, Xavier improved to 6-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the A-10. Xavier's defense kept Temple out of Musketeer territory as freshman goalkeeper Katie Markesberyearned just two saves in a 90-minute shutout performance.
Temple (4-11-0, 1-5-0) had four players with one shot each. Owl goalkeeper Tara Murphy posted eight saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Musketeers will look to remain unbeaten at the XU Soccer Complex Sunday as they host Saint Joseph's in a 1 p.m. conference tilt. Sunday's game will be video streamed live on GoXavier.com.
