INDIANAPOLIS --- The Xavier women’s soccer team battled Butler to a scoreless tie in the first half but fell 1-0 today in Indianapolis. The loss dropped the Musketeers to 8-7-1 overall and 1-6 in the BIG EAST Conference, while the Bulldogs raised their records to 10-5-2 overall and 3-4 in the BIG EAST.
“The better team won today,” said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. “I thought we made some good changes at halftime which allowed us to disrupt their attack. There is a reason why they were ranked in the Top 25 for a few weeks this year. That was on display today.”
Butler scored the match’s only goal at 54:33 when Sophia Maccagnone scored from eight yards out, slipping it past Xavier junior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery. Markesbery recorded six saves on the afternoon.
The Musketeers play their final home match of the season on Saturday against DePaul at 3 p.m. at the Xavier Soccer Complex. It will be Senior Day for eight Musketeer seniors. The match is the first part of a doubleheader with the men’s team, which hosts Providence in a 7 p.m. start. Both matches will be available via live stream broadcast on GoXavier.com.
