CINCINNATI - The Xavier University women's soccer team battled visiting La Salle University to a 2-2 tie on Friday night at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. The tie gives Xavier a 6-8-2 overall record and a 1-3-2 record in the the Atlantic 10 Conference, while La Salle is now 7-8-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the A-10.
Xavier freshman Brittany Green got the scoring started tonight at 29:25 when she drilled a shot from 23 yards. Green was set up nicely on the play by passes from sophomore Carissa Gilbert to freshman Ali Nellis and to Green for the finish. Green's goal was her sixth of the season, tying her for the team lead.
Xavier took its 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After a scoreless first 15 minutes of the second half, La Salle's offense came alive and the Explorers scored twice in less than four minutes to grab a 2-1 lead. The first La Salle goal came at 60:08 when Michelle Verzi scored on a header off a cross from Kristin Hextall. Less than four minutes later at 64:03 Ally Kenney scored from point blank range in front of the goal.
The Explorers held their 2-1 lead until the game's final minute when sophomore Susan Loeffler found the back of the net with just 22 seconds left in regulation off a cross from Gilbert, who earned her second assist of the game.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the two 10-minute overtime periods. XU came close a number of times in the second overtime but a 5-0 shot advantage in the second overtime didn't earn Xavier a goal.
Tonight's game marked Xavier's seventh overtime match of the season, including its second straight and fourth over the last five matches.
Xavier is home again on Sunday to host Atlantic 10 Conference foe George Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m. Xavier hosts George Washington on Sunday. It will be "Senior Day" for five Musketeer seniors: Angie Scarlato (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy), Amber Silvis (Hamersville, Ohio/Western Brown), Ashley Silvis (Hamersville, Ohio/Western Brown), Erika Staneff (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) and Ashley Valdiserri (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park).
