CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision this afternoon at Providence College. The loss dropped Xavier to 8-6-1 overall and 1-5 in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence improved its records to 5-7-3 overall and 2-4 in BIG EAST play. 

Xavier jumped out to a 1-0 lead when senior Mariah Whitaker scored her third goal of the season in the 34th minute, collecting a free kick from fellow senior Lauren Heap and finishing it off. Heap earned her team-high tying fifth assist of the season.

Providence answered seven minutes later off a corner kick with Hannah Wear finishing off the play with a header for the goal. The two teams went to the locker room at halftime tied 1-1.

The Friars grabbed the lead early in the second half at 49:47 as Catherine Zimmerman found the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winner.

Xavier plays at Butler on Sunday at 1 p.m.
