DAYTON, Ohio - The Xavier women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at Dayton Saturday night at UD's Baujan Field. With the loss, the Musketeers move to 6-8-1 overall and 1-4 in Atlantic 10 play while the Flyers improve to 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in league action. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Markesbery tallied a season-high 14 saves in the match for XU.
"Unbelievable 81 minutes for our group tonight," reflected head coach Woody Sherwood following the match. "We went down early on a penalty kick call and then we fought back to stay on the game. All the credit goes to Dayton, though, they are an extremely tough team, especially at home. Although we were playing against one of the better teams in the country, we feel like our kids deserved a better result than they got for what they put into the game tonight. Finally, we are at home for the last four games of season where we know we control our own A-10 Tournament destiny."
Dayton got on the board in the 20th minute off a penalty kick goal by Juliana Libertin but Xavier held strong defensively for the next 60 minutes of action. Colleen Williams netted UD's second score, a high shot to the opposite post in the 81st minute. The Flyers' second insurance goal of the second half was scored in the 85th minute by Ashley Campbell as she corralled a pass from across the box and sent the ball in to the low near post to give UD its final margin of 3-0.
The Musketeers' best chance of the game came in the last minute of play as junior Mariah Whitaker's header was saved by the Flyers' keeper. On the night, XU got off four shots - once each from Whitaker, juniors Taylor Dearbaugh and Ashton Green and sophomore Meredith Gleichert.
The Flyers out-shot the Musketeers 38-4 with 17 shots on goal. UD took 10 corner kicks to XU `s two and it committed 12 fouls to Xavier's five.
This is the second consecutive season and the fifth time in the last seven years that Xavier has had to travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers. This season's game was originally scheduled to take place in Cincinnati but after the late additions of Butler and Virginia Commonwealth to the Atlantic 10, schedules were rearranged late in the summer.
Markesbery (6-8-1) was charged with the loss on the night after tallying a season-high 14 saves. She gave up three goals against in 90 minutes of work.
Jordin Melchert (9-2-0) was credited with the win for UD. She recorded one save to zero goals against in 90 minutes of action.
The Musketeers have wrapped up a six-game road stint and finally return home next Friday, Oct. 19 to play host to Duquesne in A-10 play. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Xavier Soccer Complex. The match will be the team's "Think Pink" game to bring awareness to breast cancer research. Wear pink!
