CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women’s soccer team recorded its first BIG EAST Conference win today with an impressive second-half comeback, knocking off Seton Hall 2-1 at the Xavier Soccer Complex. Freshman Ellie Eckerle scored one goal and assisted on the game-winner by senior Taylor Dearbaugh.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie at halftime. Seton Hall wasted very little time putting an end to the scoring drought in the second half at Marie Klemme found the back of the net in the 48th minute.
Xavier turned it up a notch, on offense and defense, for the final 40 minutes. Freshman Ellie Eckerle scored the equalizer on a header at 52:39, finishing off an excellent long free kick from senior Lauren Heap. Heap earned an assist on the play.
Eckerle started the offensive play that led to the eventual game-winner at 75:12, finding fellow freshman Tori Doss, who passed it off to Dearbaugh. Dearbaugh spun away from the defender and blasted a shot with her left foot past the Seton Hall goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.
The Xavier defense held Seton Hall scoreless down the stretch. Junior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery snagged eight saves on the day, while getting plenty of defensive help from her teammates.
The Musketeers hit the road for their next two matches, at Providence on Thursday at 3 p.m. and next Sunday at Butler at 1 p.m.
