CINCINNATI --- The No. 21 Marquette Golden Eagles women's soccer team defeated the Xavier Musketeers 3-0 today at the Xavier Soccer Complex. The win raised Marquette's records to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the BIG EAST Conference, while Xavier fell to 7-5-1 overall and 0-4 in the BIG EAST Conference.
"Marquette proved to be every bit as good as we expected," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "Playing the No. 10 and No. 21 ranked teams within a week of each other is really a great opportunity for our kids to learn what it's like at the top of the BIG EAST. We were able to create couple of good counter attack opportunities but the final product needs to be a quality shot on goal. The experience we are getting this year will be invaluable as we build forward into the second half of the conference season. We have some much needed recovery coming this week as we try to get everyone healthy for Seton Hall next Saturday."
Marquette opened the scoring at 18:48 into the match as Katie Hismeth fired a shot from the left side that deflected off a Xavier defender and into the goal. Marquette led 1-0 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles got an insurance goal early in the second half as a Taylor Madigan shot was blocked by XU goalkeeper Katie Markesbery but deflected to a waiting Mary Luba, who finished off the goal to put MU up 2-0 at 41:19. The visitors tacked on a third goal with just 12 seconds left in the match.
Xavier plays the final match of this three-match homestand versus Seton Hall on Saturday, October 12 at 3 p.m.
