CINCINNATI -- -

The Xavier women's soccer team battled visiting Rhode Island to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Friday night at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. The Musketeer women deserved a better fate but had to settle for a draw.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half of action and the 7-7 shot total backed up the score.

Xavier dominated action after intermission, much more than its 14-8 second half advantage in shots. The Musketeers controlled the half and finally broke through with a goal in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Brittany Green drilled a shot past URI goalkeeper Jackie Fede at the 71:07 mark. The goal came not long after Green had hit the crossbar on one of XU's dangerous second-half chances.

The Musketeers were still up 1-0 after 89:35 had expired in the match. That's when the XU defense made a mistake on the clear and instead left the ball in the box. URI senior Thorunn Jonsdottir cleaned up the mistake to tie the match at 1-1 with just 24 seconds left.

Xavier controlled the action in most of both overtimes as well and had a number of chances for a golden goal. XU just couldn't find the back of the net.

Xavier goes to 2-1-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 3-8-1 overall, while Rhode Island is now 2-0-1 in the A-10 and 7-2-2 overall.

Xavier completes the three-match homestand when it hosts Massachusetts on Sunday at 1p.m.
