Women's Soccer Team Loses Its BIG EAST Home Opener To Villanova

CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women’s soccer team lost a hard-fought 2-1 match against Villanova tonight at the Xavier Soccer Complex. The match, Xavier’s first-ever home BIG EAST game, dropped the Musketeers to 7-4-1 overall and 0-3 in the BIG EAST Conference, while Villanova raised its records to 5-5-2 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Villanova struck early in the match as Reanna Marino found the back of the net in the 13th minute. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal at 60:30 to go up 2-0 but the Musketeers wouldn’t go down without a fight. Xavier scored in the 73rd minute when sophomore Catherine Allon connected with a shot high over the outstretched Villanova goalkeeper into the right side of the net. XU had chances to tie the score down the stretch, including a misfire from right in front of the goal.
The shot totals were equal at 10 apiece for the match as were the shots on goal at five apiece.
Xavier looks for its first BIG EAST win again on Sunday as the Musketeers host Marquette at 1:00 p.m. at the Xavier Soccer Complex.
