Senior Jennifer Perri got off her first career shot in Sunday's match

AMHERST, Mass. - The Xavier women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 result at Massachusetts Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference action. The Musketeers move to 6-5-1 overall and 1-1 in league play with the loss.
"A disappointing performance for us today," said head coach Woody Sherwood following the match. "We came up against a team that was significantly better than us on the day. All the credit goes to UMass. Overall, for us to get three points on the road during opening weekend, we are very happy. We have another tough road trip coming up at Saint Louis and Butler, which we will prepare for this week."
Massachusetts (6-6-0, 1-1 A-10) out-shot Xavier 24-4 on the afternoon with 10 shots goal. The Minutewomen took seven corner kicks to the Musketeers' zero and UMass committed nine fouls to XU's five.
Four Musketeers tallied shots on the afternoon, including sophomore Katie Schweer who recorded the team's only shot on goal. Senior Jennifer Perri had a rare appearance in the field for XU, getting off her first career shot during the match. Junior Mariah Whitaker and freshman Erin McGauley chipped in one shot apiece as well.
Massachusetts got on the board early in the contest, finding the back of the net in the fourth minute. Moa Mattsson dribbled in alone after an over-the-top breakaway and put UMass up 1-0 early. The Minutewomen scored again in the 79th minute as Jen Coppola netted the ball on a through pass from Emily Benjamin.
Katie Markesbery (6-5-1, 1-1 A-10) was charged with the loss. She tallied eight saves to two goals against in 90 minutes of action for the Musketeers.
Emily Cota (4-2-0, 1-1 A-10) was awarded the win for the Minutewomen. She collected one save to zero goals against, also playing the entire game for UMass.
The Musketeers return to action October 5 when they head to St. Louis to square off against the Saint Louis Billikens. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.
