Sept. 30, 2005
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women's soccer team got two goals and an assist from freshman Sara Doutt on the way to a 6-2 rout of visiting Temple. Xavier evened its records at 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the visting Owls fell to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic 10. XU has now won three of its last four matches.
Xavier jumped out early 1-0 when freshman Sara Schmidt nailed one past the Temple goalkeeper at 9:50 into the first half. Schmidt was set up nicely on assists from senior Angie Scarlato to Doutt, who served it to Schmidt for the game's first score.
Temple answered with a goal at 30:59 when freshman Cori Gallagher knocked the ball over the head of XU freshman goalkeeper Ashley Donaldson and into the goal.
The Musketeers took the lead for good at 42:53 of the first half as junior Amber Silvis took a nice pass off a corner kick from senior Molly Finnerty, faked to the right of the Temple goalie and beat her back left and knocked it in to put XU ahead 2-1. That is the way the half ended. Finnerty earned an assist on the play.
The Silvis goal near the end of the first half marked the first of three straight scoring plays where Silvis contributed. Freshman Melissa Zimmerman scored at 50:30 in the second half to extend the lead to 3-1. Scarlato served it up to Silvis, who fed Zimmerman.
Doutt got into the goal scoring action about ten minutes later as she took a pass from Silvis off a corner kick and headed it in at 61:23. Doutt scored again six minutes later at 67:42 when she sent a long 35 yard bomb over the head of the Temple goalkeeper and into the goal.
Xavier, which led 5-1, began emptying the bench after the fifth goal. First-year head coach Alvin Alexander used all 25 healthy players in the game, including all three goalkeepers.
Temple freshman Katrina Lynch scored at 86:43 to cut the lead to 5-2. Xavier answered with a sixth goal at 88:49 when freshman Molly Johnson scored her first career goal, finishing off a nice cross from sophomore Nalani Butler.
Xavier, 5-5, has already equaled the win total of last year's 5-12-2 squad. In addition, XU has scored 19 goals in ten matches, which is more than the 19-match total of 17 goals last season.
The Musketeers host Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
