KINGSTON, R.I. - The Xavier women's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a bang, claiming a 1-0 decision at Rhode Island Friday night. Freshman Catherine Allon netted her second game-winner of the season in the 20th minute for the Musketeers.

"Rhode Island is an extremely good team, very well coached and very organized," said head coach Woody Sherwood following the match. "We got an early goal which put us in a little bit of a defending mode and them in an attacking mode. To our kids' credit, we managed to hang on, defend pretty well and only give away one really dangerous chance in the second half. Overall, we showed some grit that we've been lacking at times this year. We look forward to bringing that against a very good UMass team on Sunday."

Xavier (6-4-1, 1-0 A-10) only got off three shots on the night to Rhode Island's (7-4-1, 0-1 A-10) 15. XU committed 13 fouls to URI's nine and the Rams took six corner kicks to the Musketeers' two.

In addition to Allon's shot on goal, senior Brooke Eberly also tallied a shot on goal while freshman Erin McGauley was the third Musketeer to take a shot.

Allon's game-winner came in the 20th minute. Senior Leslie Twehues served up the ball to Allon at point-blank range and she sent it in under the upper right crossbar.

There were two cautions issued at the end of the match, one to each team. Rhode Island's Madison Vandine and Xavier's Taylor Dearbaugh were each shown a yellow card in the 90th minute.

Sophomore Katie Markesbery (6-4-1) was credited with the win for the Musketeers after putting in 90 minutes of work between the posts. She recorded six saves on the night to zero goals against in her fourth shutout of the season.

Reilly Lindsey (3-4-1) was charged with the loss as she also guarded the goal for the entire 90 minutes. She recorded one save to one goal against in the loss.

The Musketeers return to action on Sunday with their second A-10 contest of the weekend at Massachusetts. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
