Women's Soccer Team Evens Its Atlantic 10 Record With A Big Road Win

The Xavier University women's soccer team evened its Atlantic 10 Conference record at 1-1 with a 2-1 victory today at George Washington. The Musketeers go for two straight wins when they return home on Sunday to host Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. in an Atlantic 10 Conference match at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.

 

Xavier struck for the only goal of the first half at the 22:48 mark as sophomore Brittany Green crossed the ball into the box and senior Carissa Gilbert finished it off for her first goal of the season. Green was credited with her team-high fourth assist of the season.

 

XU led 1-0 at the halftime break.

 

George Washington pulled even with the Musketeers in the 53rd minute as Erica Wright found the back of the net off an assist from Lauren Kelly. The two teams were tied 1-1 at 52:51.

 

Xavier took the lead back at the 73:23 mark. Freshman Carlyanne Wenzel took a pass from senior Karin Martini, gathered it and chipped it over the GW goalkeeper and into the net for a 2-1 lead. It marked her team-high fourth goal of the season.

 

Xavier is now 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 and 2-8 overall, while George Washington is 0-1 in the A-10 and 5-3 overall.

 

Xavier's Sunday match against the Hawks opens a three-match homestand.
