Women's Soccer Team Drops BIG EAST Opener At St. John's 2-0
Sept. 26, 2013
Queens, N.Y. --- The Xavier University women’s soccer team dropped its BIG EAST Conference opener tonight at St. John’s, 2-0. The loss dropped XU to 0-1 in the BIG EAST and 7-2-1 overall, while St. John’s raised its records to 1-0 and 7-1-1.
The only goal either team managed in the first half was a penalty kick by St. John’s. Rachel Daly scored the first of what turned out to be a two-goal effort in the game’s 32nd minute. St. John’s led 1-0 at halftime. That was the only goal scored in the match’s first 62 minutes until the Red Storm added an insurance goal at 62:37.
Xavier created some chances despite playing short-handed on the offensive end with freshman Maggie Hare, who is tied for the team lead in goals, not making the trip due to an injury.
“St. John’s is the best-playing soccer team we have seen this season,” said head coach Woody Sherwood. “With that said, I was very proud of how we responded except for the final third. The thing we talked about before the game is that in the BIG EAST really good teams make you pay for mistakes. We had a couple of big mistakes tonight and St. John’s made us pay.”
The challenge gets even stiffer on Sunday as Xavier travels to play at No. 10 Georgetown, the BIG EAST preseason favorite, for a 1 p.m. match.
