Women's Soccer Team Shuts Out Local Rival NKU
Sept. 20, 2013
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women's soccer team raised its record to 6-1-1 with a 1-0 shutout victory over Northern Kentucky University at the Xavier Soccer Complex. NKU falls to 4-1-1 with the loss.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the first 59 minutes of action before Xavier finally broke through offensively in the 60th minute. Senior Taylor Dearbaugh blasted a shot from 30 yards out at 59:23, hitting the underside of the crossbar as it went through the goal.
The Musketeer defense made it stand up as it finished off the shutout. Junior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery had a pair of saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season.
"I thought we came out and played pretty well overall, especially considering the weather conditions," said head coach Woody Sherwood. The game was delayed for 40 minutes by weather but that and rain throughout most of the match didn't keep 312 loyal fans from braving the elements.
"This game is always going to be a battle," Sherwood continued. "Last fall it was 1-0 us in overtime. This spring we were down 2-0 and came back to win it 3-2. It's a great game for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky soccer fans."
Now the Musketeers must turn their sights to a tough test on Monday against NAIA power Northwestern Ohio at 6:30 p.m. at the Xavier Soccer Complex. "We are looking forward to a big challenge Monday," said Sherwood, "and seeing how we match up against a team that arguably will challenge for the NAIA National Championship."
