CINCINNATI -- With a goal in the 101st minute, sophomore Taylor Dearbaugh lifted Xavier to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Austin Peay Sunday afternoon at the XU Soccer Complex. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 5-3-0 on the season while the Governors fell to 6-3-0.
"To shutout the team that leads the nation in goals is a great accomplishment," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "Friday night's double-overtime game with EKU definitely took a toll on us today. You could see the momentum swing in Austin Peay's favor late in the second half when we started to fatigue. I give a lot of credit to our subs this weekend. Our assistants, Keri Heedum and Ty Smith, did an outstanding job this weekend with our substitution pattern. They were able to buy our starters some valuable rest time, which we ended up needing late in the game. We look forward to an opportunity to take on another nationally ranked team on Friday night at Dayton."
Dearbaugh's goal came off a forward pass from senior Jessica Brooks early in the second overtime period. The XU sophomore collected the pass near the penalty marker and drove it home for Xavier's second golden goal victory in as many games.
Dearbaugh led the Musketeers with five shots while Brooks followed with three strikes. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Markesberry earned her second straight shutout while Xavier remained unbeaten at home on the season.
The Musketeers will face No. 24 Dayton Friday, September 23 at 5:30 p.m. at UD's Baujan Field.
