Women's Soccer Records Impressive 3-1 Win Over Visiting Louisville

CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University Musketeer women's soccer team beat the University of Louisville Cardinals 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. Xavier raised its record to 3-4 with the win, while Louisville fell to 6-2 with the loss.
The Musketeers jumped out on top 20:54 into the first half as freshman Maggie O'Neal (Edina, MN) served a perfect cross to senior Angie Scarlato in front of the goal. Scarlato drilled it in the net for what proved to be the only goal of the first half for either team.
Louisville caught a break at the 55:01 mark in the second half as an accidental XU hand ball gave the Cards a penalty kick. Freshman Mallory Lampson drilled the penalty kick inside the left post, tying the score 1-1.
Xavier players didn't hold their head down after the UL goal. XU answered less than 10 minutes later as freshman Melissa Zimmerman stole a pass from the UL goalie and knocked in what proved to be the game-winner at 64:52.
The Musketeers got an insurance goal at the 74:44 mark. Freshman Sara Schmidt drilled a shot towards the goal that was deflected and saved by a UL defender. Xavier sophomore Shannon Chambers got the deflection and put it in the back of the net. Schmidt was credited with an assist on the play. XU led 3-1 and held on the rest of the match.
Freshman Lindsey Cullins recorded five saves and allowed only the penalty kick goal in recWomen'sording her second win of the season.
Xavier visits crosstown rival Cincinnati on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match. XU returns home next Sunday at 4:00 p.m. to open Atlantic 10 Conference play against defending
