CINCINNATI -- With a `golden goal' in the 108th minute, sophomore Ashton Green lifted the Musketeers to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky Friday evening at the XU Soccer Complex.
"If there was ever a game that this group deserved to win, it was tonight," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "Their performance, especially in the second half was the best of the season. We just need to do a better job with our final ball and put a few more shots on the frame. Our team has proven to be stingy giving up goals and once again we showed that."
Green finished a forward pass from junior Leslie Twehues from the corner of the penalty box to give the Musketeers the win in double-overtime. Green, Jessica Brooks, and Lauren Heap led the Musketeers with four shots each. XU out-shot EKU 21-6.
Defensively, XU was solid as it held EKU to just six shots with Katie Markesberry earning one save.
The Musketeers return to action Sunday as they host Austin Peay at 1 p.m. Sunday's game will be the inaugural live video stream of the season on GoXavier.com.
