CINCINNATI --- The Xavier University women's soccer team is still undefeated after a 1-0 win at Morehead State on Sunday. Xavier, 5-0-1, is off to the program's best start after six matches since 1990.
"We knew coming in here it was going to be a challenge to play attractively since Morehead plays on a 65-yard wide football field," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "Possession was not what we wanted it to be. We really challenged our players at halftime. In the second half we were able to create a couple very good chances and one of them resulted in a goal. Now we need to turn our sights to Indiana on Wednesday."
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie for the first 72 minutes of action. Freshman Maggie Hare scored what proved to be the match's only goal at 72:35 in the second half. It marked the third goal of the season for Hare and her second straight match finding the back of the net.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery recorded her fourth straight shutout, while collecting a pair of saves.
The Musketeers have shut out five of their first six opponents, including the last four. Xavier's undefeated record is the best six-match start since the 1990 team when that team began the season at 8-0.
Morehead State fell to 0-6-1 with the loss.
Xavier plays at Indiana on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before returning home next weekend to host Northern Kentucky on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
