Sept. 15, 2012
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Xavier women's soccer team settled for its first tie of the season, a 1-1 draw at Evansville Saturday afternoon. Junior Mariah Whitaker scored the Musketeers' lone goal of the day, assisted by senior Brooke Eberly.
Whitaker and junior Ashton Green each got off three shots on the day while junior Taylor Dearbaugh and sophomore Margaret Woods added two shots apiece. Evansville (1-6-2) out-shot Xavier (5-4-1) 25-13 for the game, including 12 shots in the second half alone. All four of the Musketeers' corner kicks came in the first half while the Purple Aces took a total of nine in the game.
One caution was issued during the contest, a yellow card to Green in the 95th minute. In the second overtime, sophomore goalkeeper Katie Markesbery came up with a clutch save in the 109th minute. That would be the final time either team came relatively close to earning the golden goal.
The Purple Aces came out firing in the second half as Evansville scored the first goal of the game in the 48th minute. UE's Kayla Smith headed the ball into the left corner of the net off a free ball from a failed defensive clear to give the Aces the 1-0 advantage.
The Musketeers would get the equalizer in the 81st minute. Eberly took a free kick after an Ace was called for pushing a Musketeer about 45 yards out. Whitaker got her head on the ball and her shot was just out of reach of the Evansville keeper and into the back of the net.
The two squads were pretty even on paper in the first half with the Purple Aces narrowly out-shooting the Musketeers, 6-5. XU took four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes to UE's two.
This is also the first tie of the season for XU keeper Markesbery (5-4-1). She corralled a season-high 12 saves and suffered one goal against in 110 minutes of work.
Simone Busby (0-0-2) was charged with her second draw of the season for Evansville. She tallied eight saves to one goal against, also in 110 minutes of action.
The Musketeers have the next week off and will not return to action until Friday, Sept. 28 when they hit the road to Kingston, R.I. XU will open Atlantic 10 play at Rhode Island with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
