Women's Soccer Team Stays Undefeated With Shutout Win Over Crosstown Rival Cincinnati
Sept. 13, 2013
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier women's soccer team shut out visiting Cincinnati tonight, 3-0, before a school-record crowd of 1,804 at the Xavier Soccer Complex. The Musketeers, who raised their record to 4-0-1, are off to their best start since beginning the 1997 season at 5-0.
There were plenty of local heroes for the Musketeers, starting with freshman Maggie Hare (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), who scored the first goal of the match just 13:32 into the first half. Hare drilled a shot into the upper right side through multiple UC defenders.
All three of the Xavier's tri-captains came up big tonight. Senior tri-captain Lauren Heap scored XU's second goal in the 40th minute on a penalty kick, her first goal since her freshman season in 2010. Senior tri-captain Sydnee Fields (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) assisted on the final Xavier goal, which was scored by sophomore Erin McGauley in the 66th minute with a shot just inside the left post. The third senior tri-captain, junior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery (Cincinnati/Indian Hill), notched her third straight shutout while recording seven saves. She got plenty of help as well from the Musketeer defense, including Heap and Fields.
Xavier, which snapped a five-match losing streak to UC, hits the road for a contest this Sunday at Morehead State at 1 p.m. The match will be available on a free live stream via the Morehead State web site.
