CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals Wednesday night in a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting Eastern Kentucky. Freshman Erin McGauley scored the game-winner in the 14th minute and senior Brooke Eberlyadded an insurance goal in the 75th minute for the Musketeers.
"Great effort by our group tonight," commented head coach Woody Sherwood. "As I've said before, anytime we can get two goals and give up none that's a good night for us. I thought the first 30 minutes were the best soccer we've played all year. In the second half, we absorbed a little more pressure which is usual when you have the lead as the other team starts pressing."
Eastern Kentucky (3-4-1) led the shots 17-12 and took 11 corner kicks to Xavier's (5-4-0) five. One caution was issued during the contest, a yellow card to sophomore Alyssa Tindalin the 73rd minute.
The Musketeers got on the board early in the first half as freshman Kassidy Mikula served the ball into the box to classmate McGauley. She got a head on the ball and sent it into the back of the net. Her second score of the season turned out to be the game winner.
Xavier entered the second half with a 1-0 lead and was able to score an insurance goal in the 75th minute. Junior Mariah Whitaker took a corner kick from the left side and sent the ball in to freshman Catherine Allon. Allon deflected the ball to Eberly who found the net to give XU the 2-0 edge, an advantage the Musketeers would not relinquish.
Sophomore Katie Markesbery (5-4-0) was awarded the win, her third shutout of the season. She tallied seven saves to zero goals against.
Erika Wolfer (3-4-1) was charged with the loss for the Colonels. She recorded one save to two goals against.
The Musketeers will be back in action on Saturday at Evansville. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
