Xavier Gets Past Morehead State, 2-1, at Home Sunday Afternoon
CINCINNATI - The Xavier women's soccer team bounced back with a 2-1 win over Morehead State Sunday evening at XU Soccer Complex. Freshman Erin McGauley scored her first collegiate goal which proved to be the Musketeers' game-winner and sophomore Margaret Woodstallied her second score of the season in the win.
"I told the team after the game they need to enjoy this type of win because nothing is going to come easy for us this year," commented head coach Woody Sherwoodfollowing the win. "A couple of things that happened was one, we came from behind which is hard for anyone let alone a team like us that has challenges scoring goals and two, we kept our winning record at home. For us to get two goals in a game is really a positive. We look forward to building on this game and what we learned Friday night and take that into the game against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday."
Xavier (4-4-0) and Morehead State (0-6-1) finished the game even in shots at nine apiece. The fouls were nearly even as well with XU committing six miscues to Morehead's seven. There was one caution issued during the match, a yellow card to MSU's Teig Palmateer in the 77th minute.
MSU was able to get on the board early in the contest, scoring its goal in the sixth minute. Samantha Matherly played a ball that had deflected off a Musketeer defender in the six-yard box and found the net to put the Eagles ahead, 1-0.
Woods scored the equalizer for the Musketeers in the 39th minute after sophomore Alyssa Tindalbeat her defender on the left side and served up the ball. Woods' header got past the Eagles' keeper to tie the game at 1-1. Tindal would exit the game shortly after with a rolled ankle but returned in the second half.
McGauley's game-winner came in the 58th minute as she beat her defender right outside the 18-yard box. McGauley dribbled toward the goal on the right side and skipped the ball in the opposite side of the net, out of reach of the keeper. XU took the 2-1 lead and would not relinquish.
