CINCINNATI The Xavier women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to Indiana at home Friday night. The Musketeers got several good looks at the goal but were unable to convert. Freshman Erin McGauley led XU with four shots on the night.

"In my 19 years of coaching I don't think I've been a part of a game like this before where shots and corners were so close but the score was not," commented head coach Woody Sherwood. "I thought we generated some of our best attacks of the year but unfortunately our defending was poor and Indiana made us pay for some mistakes. If we can create some of the same opportunities on Sunday that we did tonight we should be in good shape moving forward."

Sherwood was recognized by the team prior to the start of the match with a game ball from his 100th career head coaching win, the 2-1 victory over Lipscomb at home on Aug. 20.

The Musketeers had several strong attacks in the first half that were thwarted by a very crafty Indiana goalkeeper. All three of Indiana's saves came in the first 45 minutes. The Hoosiers led the Musketeers in shot attempts, 16-12, and narrowly nudged XU in corners, 6-5, for the game.

In addition to McGauley, juniors Bridget Tully and Ashton Green tallied two shots apiece while senior Brooke Eberly, juniors Laura Rao and Mariah Whitaker and freshman Catherine Alloneach chipped in one shot on the night.

The Hoosiers had balanced scoring on the night with five different players finding the net. Although she didn't score, Orianica Velasquez fired six shots in the match, four of which were on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Markesbery (3-4-0) was charged with the loss for the Musketeers. She recorded five saves to five goals against in 70:10 minutes of action. Senior Jennifer Perrifinished out the game for XU in goal, working 19:50 minutes tallying one save.

Shannon Flower (4-2-1) was credited with the win for Indiana. She recorded three saves to zero goals against in 72:24 minutes of action. Sarah Stone put in 17:36 minutes between the posts for the Hoosiers to end the match.

Xavier will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 as they play host to Morehead State at XU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
