CINCINNATI -- Xavier sophomore Mariah Whitaker's goal in the 58th minute was all the Musketeers needed to earn a 1-0 victory over Evansville Wednesday night at the XU Soccer Complex. With the win, the Musketeers improved to 2-2-0 while the Purple Aces fell to 1-3-1.
"To get a shutout and a win against one of the best Evansville teams I've seen in a while is promising," said head coach Woody Sherwood. "We felt, once again, that we were pretty organized defensively. Fortunately, Katie Markesbery came up with a very good save on the one big mistake we made late in the game. We played two completely different styles of play today, making a good adjustment in the second half. Twenty players saw the field tonight, which shows we do have some good depth this season."
Defensively, the Musketeers were on the top of their game as they held the Purple Aces scoreless for 90 minutes. For freshman goalkeeper Markesbery it was her first career shutout as she went for 90 minutes with seven saves.
Offensively, junior midfielder Leslie Twehues led the way with three shots.
Evansville goalkeeper Chaviel Harrison earned five saves in the game and Tashia Prentice led the way with four shots.
Xavier will try to make it three wins in a row Sunday as the Musketeers host Ball State at 1 p.m.
