CINCINNATI -- Freshman Alyssa Tindal's first career goal combined with sophomore Ashton Green's first goal of the season lifted the Xavier women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over local rival Miami (Ohio) Friday night at the XU Soccer Complex. With the win, Xavier improved to 1-2-0 on the season while the RedHawks fell to 2-1-0.
"Coming into this evening's match we really thought it would be a one goal game," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "This week we implemented some additional attacking options to try to put more pressure on our opponents' back line. The team did a great job of buying into this and executed it pretty well this evening. A well deserved win against a very good Miami team."
Tindal got the Musketeers on the board in the 22nd minute when she took a highlight-worthy crossing shot that bent its way into the upper 90. Senior Jessica Brooks was credited with the assist on the goal.
Green followed with a quick shot on a forward pass by Chelsea Burns in the 37th minute that gave XU a 2-0 lead.
Miami would not be denied as Jess Kodiak got a penalty kick past Xavier goalkeeper Katie Markesbery that cut the Musketeer lead in half.
However, the Xavier defense was up to the task as the Musketeers held the RedHawks scoreless in the second half to hold on for the win. Markesbery finished the contest with four saves in a complete game.
Tindal and sophomore defender Lauren Heap led the team with three shots each.
The Musketeers return to action as they host Evansville, August 31 at 7 p.m.
