Women's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision to Western Kentucky at Ball State Tournament
Aug. 24, 2012
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Xavier women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Western Kentucky in its first game of the 2012 Ball State Tournament Friday afternoon at BSU's Briner Sports Complex. Freshman Erin McGauley led the Musketeers offensively with three shots, including one on goal.
"Any time you give up three goals in a game it's tough," commented XU head coach Woody Sherwood. "I think the big difference between last year's team and this year's team is that last year's team really defended well. We had 18 goals against last season and already we've given up seven in the first three games. We've got to keep working to find the right player personnel that can help keep us in games. I'm not so concerned about being out-shot, we went through that last year and still were in a lot of games. It's more about preventing some of these goals. Certainly, we'd like to create a few more chances on Sunday."
Western Kentucky (2-1-0) out-shot Xavier (1-2-0) 25-7 for the game. In addition to McGauley, junior Ashton Green tallied two shots while junior Laura Rao and sophomore Katie Schweer each added one apiece. WKU took five corner kicks to XU's one.
The Lady Toppers struck first as Allie Auscherman was served the ball just left of center of the goal and slipped it into the right side of the net to put WKU up 1-0 with just over 15 minutes left in the first half. WKU finished the first frame leading in shots, 12-2.
Just over five minutes into the second half, the Musketeers committed a foul inside the box resulting in a Lady Topper penalty kick. Ali Stahlke squared off against sophomore goalkeeper Katie Markesbery, and found the back of the net. In the 83rd minute, WKU's Lauren Moats dribbled in from 20 yards out and beat the keeper sending the ball into the back right corner. WKU held on for the 3-0 win.
Markesbery (1-2-0) was charged with the loss for the Musketeers. She tallied a season-high 10 saves to three goals against in 85:30 minutes of work. Senior Jennifer Perri closed out the game for XU between the posts for the final 4:30 of the contest.
Nikki Hall (2-1-0) recorded the win for the Lady Toppers. She grabbed one save to no goals against. Hall played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Lady Toppers.
The Musketeers return to action on Sunday in their second game of the Ball State Tournament. XU will square off against the host Cardinals at 2:30 at BSU's Briner Sports Complex.
