Women's Soccer Opens The Regular Season With A Shutout Win
Aug 23, 2013
West Lafayette, Ind. --- The Xavier University women's soccer team got the 2013 regular season off to a great start with a 3-0 shutout win over North Dakota in the first game of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The freshmen and seniors led the way for the Musketeers.
“I think the fact that we played two very challenging preseason games (Notre Dame and Miami) paid off for us today,” said head coach Woody Sherwood. “We spent a lot of time in practice this week cleaning up some of the defensive holes that were exposed in the preseason. I am very happy that we scored three goals, especially since we haven’t spent a lot of time working on our attack. We possessed the ball today better than we have at any time so far in my four years and we were able to create a lot of very good chances.”
Three different Musketeers scored, while the defense recorded a shutout. Xavier opened the scoring 20 minutes into the match as freshman Tori Doss deflected the ball into the net off a right to left cross as senior Sydnee Fields and senior Taylor Dearbaugh earned assists. XU extended its lead to 2-0 when freshman Maggie Hare connected from 18 yards at 37:12 off an assist from sophomore Erin McGauley. The Musketeers went into halftime up 2-0.
Freshman Rachel Piccus earned her first career victory and first career shutout, while recording four saves.
Xavier outshot North Dakota 21-8 and earned an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Xavier takes on host Purdue on Sunday at 2 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast on a live pay-per-view stream.
