CINCINNATI --- The Xavier Musketeer women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Miami (Ohio) in its exhibition home opener tonight at the XU Soccer Complex. The Musketeers open the regular season next weekend at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup, which is hosted by Purdue.
Xavier outshot Miami 11-10, including 5-4 in shots on goal, but the visiting RedHawks made their chances count.
“I was disappointed with our first 15 minutes," said Xavier head coach Woody Sherwood. "We knew they were a top 30 caliber team but I still felt we could have matched their intensity better at the beginning of the game. Once we settled in we created a couple of nice chances to tie the game. Give credit to Miami, they played very well. We will see if our rigorous preseason game schedule has prepared us for the season next week.”
Miami opened the scoring at the 14:45 mark of the first half as Katy Dolesh scored on a header. Xavier had a dangerous chance to tie the score early in the second half on a breakaway but Tori Doss' shot went wide right. MU added insurance goals in the 57th and 59th minutes to bring the final tally to 3-0.
Xavier opens the regular season on Friday against North Dakota in the first game of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in West Lafayette, Ind. XU plays host Purdue next Sunday in its other match next weekend.
