Sophomore Tori Doss scored in the opening minute of the exhibition match against Dayton
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer kicked off the 2014 season by playing rival Dayton to a draw in an exhibition contest on Thursday night. The match consisted of three 30-minute periods and served as a warm-up for Xavier's regular season opener.
Xavier took the early lead when sophomore forward Tori Doss broke away with the opening kick and scored an unassisted goal in the opening minute of the contest, 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Katie Markesbery preserved the lead with a diving save in the opening minutes of the second period. The Musketeers held the lead until Dayton's Kaitlynn Kiehl got behind the defense and scored to an open goal in the second period to tie the game, 1-1.
"To get a draw against one of the better teams in the country, is tremendous," said Xavier women's soccer head coach Woody Sherwood after the game. "Dayton is so dynamic, they make defending them a real challenge. We will build on that and look forward to heading east for James Madison and Towson next weekend."
After the game both teams cooled down by participating in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge together on the field.
The Musketeers open the regular season on Friday, August 22 at James Madison, the first of two games in the James Madison Invitational. XU meets the Dukes in its opener at 7:00 p.m. ET.
