Woody Sherwood is entering his third season as the Xavier University women's soccer head coach. Prior to Xavier, Sherwood spent three years at Indiana University, including two years as an assistant coach before being promoted to assistant head coach. Sherwood's impressive 16-year college coaching resume includes successful stints as a head coach at Butler and Towson and as an assistant coach at Indiana, Louisville and Xavier. He is a 1991 Xavier graduate and former four-year letterwinner who also spent three years as an assistant for the Xavier women's soccer team (1994-97). In his first season at the helm of the Musketeers, Sherwood led XU to its best record in four seasons with a 7-11-0 record. In 2011, the Musketeers were one of the top defensive teams in the nation, allowing just 18 goals all season. Prior to Xavier Sherwood spent three seasons as an assistant at Indiana. Under Sherwood's tutelage, the Indiana offense was very successful, scoring 85 goals while winning 31 matches. IU compiled a three-year record of 31-24-6 against a rugged schedule. Indiana finished 10-7-2 in Sherwood's third and final season at IU. Sherwood helped the Hoosiers to one of the finest seasons in school history in 2007 as IU finished 13-7-3 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers scored 36 goals on a school-record 343 shots and had 11 multi-goal games, up from four such games during the 2006 season. Prior to joining the Hoosier staff, Sherwood spent one season as an assistant at the University of Louisville. Sherwood helped the Cardinals post the best season in school- history, as the team posted a top-25 ranking throughout the 2006 season, won a school record 13 matches and earned its first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals went 13-4-3 on the season, allowing just 10 goals on the year. Before joining the Cardinals, Sherwood served as the head coach at Butler for seven seasons, going 63-64-10. Sherwood was named the 2002 Horizon League Coach of the Year, while guiding his team to a 15-6 mark and setting a school record for wins in a single season. He helped the Bulldogs to a conference co-championship and three runner-up finishes in the league in his seven seasons. The Bulldogs finished no lower than third in the Horizon League during his tenure. Prior to heading up the Butler program, Sherwood served as head coach at Towson for a pair of seasons, helping the Tigers to a school-record 14 wins and their first-ever regional ranking. Sherwood spent three seasons as an assistant at Xavier from 1994-97. XU compiled a three-year record of 34-23-4, including a 12-6-1 mark in his final season in the fall of 2006. Sherwood also served as a regional staff coach in Region II of the United States Youth Soccer Association from 2003-05 and was a member of the 1999 USYSA Region I staff. Additionally, he spent a pair of seasons at the helm of the Carmel United Soccer Club. Sherwood has also been active with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and was on the Great Lakes Regional Ranking Committee from 2003-06. Additionally, the Rockville, Md., native served as the NSCAA's National ranking chair in 2006. He was also a committee member of the NCAA Tournament Regional Selection Committee from 2004-06. As a player, Sherwood won four letters from Xavier while playing both at midfield and on defense. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1991 and earned his master's degree from Xavier in sport administration in 1995. In addition to his soccer expertise, Sherwood holds a Private Pilots license and recently earned his Instrument Rating. |
