Musketeers Name New Women's Golf Coach
Xavier University has named Tony Kountz head coach of its women’s golf team.
Kountz (Pronounced COUNTS) comes to Xavier from St. Ursula Academy in Cincinnati, where he has been Head Golf Coach and Director of Golf Operations since 1997. Since taking over at St. Ursula, he has amassed a 87-5 regular season record and a 95 percent winning percentage. During that time, Kountz led St. Ursula to one state championship, three city championships, two district championships and two sectional championships. He was named Cincinnati Enquirer Coach of the Year in 1997. He is currently a Corporate Sales Executive for the Cincinnati Bengals. Dennis Wells and Jeff Jones, who served as assistant coaches at St. Ursula, will accompany Kountz on his move to Xavier. Wells, who is the Head Golf Professional at Little Miami Golf Course, was captain of his college golf team at Carson-Newman College, in Tennessee. He was the 1999 Greater Cincinnati PGA Match Play Champion at Coldstream Country Club. He is regarded as one of Cincinnati’s top professional golfers. Jones will be the voluntary assistant. He has been with Kountz at St. Ursula since 1997 and has been instrumental to the golf team’s success. "We are all extremely pleased to have such a talented coach at Xavier. Tony has been very successful and will be instrumental in taking our women’s program to the next level," said Associate Athletic Director Dawn Rogers. The 30-year-old Kountz earned an economics degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1993. He was a captain and four-year letterwinner on the golf team while attending Summit Country Day High School.
