Women's Golf Signs Three Recruits

CINCINNATI --- The Xavier women’s golf team added three recruits for the 2001-2002 golf season. First-year head coach, Tony Kountz, is excited about his first class. "With the time frame we had, we were able to get three really good golfers from three states," Kountz said.

Abby Fowler (South Medford/Medford, Oregon), brings an impressive list of accomplishments from her prep career to XU. She took home medalist honors at the Klamath Basin Junior Championship and IIAJC State Qualifier. Fowler also had solid performances at the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge (8th) and the Max-Fli PGA Qualifier (2nd). She finished 18th overall at the 2000 Oregon High School State Championship. Currently, Fowler is posting a 77-tournament average this spring.

Sarah Sparks (East Noble/Kendallville, Indiana), is a First Team All-State selection as a senior. Sparks finished ninth overall at the Indiana State Championship. She strung together an impressive run of 16 first-place finishes out of 17 regular season matches. In addition to being named All-State, Sparks was named First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Area and First Team Academic All-State. Sparks also excels in the classroom where she is ranked first in her class.

Emily Shoplik (Fox Chapel Area/Pittsburgh, PA), brings a well-rounded game to XU from one of the tougher conferences in western Pennsylvania. Shoplik was named First Team All-State and All-City for her performance on the links. She captured the WPIAL Championship and placed fourth overall at the Pennsylvania State Championship. She put on a stellar performance at the USGA National, shooting a 1 under (71) at the Penn State Blue Course. Shoplik, a lefty, posts a 77 average and will be the only left-hander on the Xavier team next season.

Kountz expects these golfers to have an immediate impact. "We’re going to have three girls who can come in and play right away," he said. "This class is going to make us a heck of a lot more competitive. This is probably the best recruiting class Xavier has ever had in terms of scoring ability."
