Xavier Ready For Inaugural CAA Women's Golf Championship
The Musketeer women's golf team will spend the Easter weekend getting ready for the inaugural Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship. The Tournament is scheduled for Apr. 20-22 at Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian, Va.
Xavier will join five other teams in competition for the first ever CAA Championship. Slated to participate are James Madison, William & Mary, Hofstra, Richmond and Dayton.
Second-year Head Coach Gina Yoder-Davies will take a confident team into the CAA Tournament as the Musketeers placed third out of 15 teams in last weekend's EKU Lady Colonel Classic, marking the Musketeers' seventh Top 10 finish of the season.
Sophomore Emily Shoplik enters as Xavier's top golfer of late as she placed third last weekend and has the lowest average of any Musketeer competitor with a 79.37.
Senior Beth Hamilton and sophomore Abby Fowler are close behind with 79.84 and 80.06 averages respectively for one of the deepest and most improved teams in the 10 year history of the program. Shoplik's average has dropped by seven strokes from last season while Hamilton's fell over four strokes and Fowler has kept the same average which earned her All-Independent Second Team honors last season.
The 2003 Women's Golf Championship is part of the CAA's Spring Sports Festival which will be conducted in the Richmond area from April 17-22. Tee times for women's golf begin at 7:30am on Sunday, April 20. The event is open to the public and there is no admission fee.
