DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Xavier women’s golf team is set to open play at the 2014 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship presented by NEW YORK LIFE, held at the LPGA International Course.
The competition is scheduled for 54 holes over three days. The BIG EAST will crown a team champion, which earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship, along with an individual winner. Competition is scheduled to begin Thursday-Saturday at 8 a.m. Eastern.
Butler, Creighton, Georgetown, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Xavier will vie for the 2014 women’s golf crown. St. John’s senior Harin Lee, the 2011 individual champion, is the top returning scorer from last year when she finished fourth.
Xavier comes into the event boasting two spring victories. Senior Ariel McNair (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), sophomore Shane Crutchfield (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) and junior Abby Smith (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin County High School) are the top three seeded golfers, while the Musketeers are seeded first as a team.
Thursday’s threesomes will be determined by team and player seedings, while Friday’s and Saturday’s groupings are decided from the previous day’s leaderboard.
St. John’s is seeded second behind Xavier, while Seton Hall is third, Georgetown fourth, Butler fifth and Creighton sixth.
