Xavier Women's Golfers Take Sixth at Islander Invitational

The Xavier Women's golf team finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Islander Invitational, held on Monday and Tuesday in Texas. It was their first tournament under new head coach Tony Kountz.

Xavier shot a 987, with its best score of 324 coming on the final day. The total was 36 strokes back of the winners, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and Lamar University, which each shot 951.

The Musketeers were led by tri-captain Paula Greening (Northfield, IL) who shot a 26-over-par 242 in three rounds of action. Greening's score was good enough for 18th best. Greening was just 11 strokes off the pace of the winner. All six Musketeers finished in the top 55.

Kelly Bego (Indianapolis, IN) and Melissa Beck (Cincinnati, OH) also turned in impressive performances. Bego finished tied for 27th with a 30-over 246. Beck finished just one behind her with a 247. Freshman Jill Stein (Sussex, WI) carded a 252, while sophomore Beth Hamilton (West Chester, OH) shot a 258 and sophomore Megan Gaus (Noblesville, IN) tallied a 260.

Up next: Xavier will travel to East Carolina for the Bradford Creek Spring Invitational. The tournament will take place March 4-6.
