Sept. 21, 2013
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Abby Smith (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin County High School) tied an all-time program record for low round with a 2-under 69, as the Xavier women's golf team used a program record score of 286 to move into second place after the second round of the Yale Intercollegiate.
Smith's 69 moves her into a tie for second place, individually, and also ties her in the XU record books with seven former Musketeers, while the team's 286 breaks the low 18-hole team score record by six strokes. The record for low round was previously 292, which was achieved twice in 2005.
Xavier (303-286/589), who sits five shots back of first place Yale (292-292/584), received a solid round from sophomore Shane Crutchfield (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg). Crutchfield shot a one-under 70 to move her up the leaderboard and into a tie for sixth place.
Playing on the par-71, 6,100-yard Yale Golf Course, senior Ariel McNair (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) shot a one-under par (70) in the second round and sits tied for ninth place. Senior Christine Cash (Paducah, Ky./Heath High School) carded a 78 and fell from 14th place down to a tie for 31st, while freshman Grace Howie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/The Edge School) rounded out the Blue and White's scorecard, turning in a 6-over 77 (t-53rd).
Freshman Rachel Johnson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) and senior Kristin Tan (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy), competing as individuals, registered scores of 77 (t-31st) and 76 (t-51st), respectively.
