Women's Golf in Fourth After First Day of CAA Championship

SOUTHPORT, N.C.- The Xavier women's golf team sits in fourth place after the first round of the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship at St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C. The Musketeers carded a team total of 302 (+14) on Friday afternoon at the par 72, 6,066-yard Reserve Course. Sophomore Kristin Tan fired the team's low round of 73 (+1) and holds sole possession of sixth place.
James Madison leads the field of 10 teams competing in the championship, turning in a 6-over-par team score of 294. JMU is followed by Old Dominion (299) and 2011 champion UNCW (300). ODU's Samantha Morrell and JMU's Nicole Sakamoto hold the top individual spot after carding a 1-under-par 71 for the day.
The 302 team score is the fifth-lowest single round score of the season for the Musketeers and Tan's 73 ties her lowest round of the year.
Junior Breanna Patz posted a 75 (+3) first-round score and is tied for ninth while senior Michelle Winkler fired a 4-over-par 76 (t-12th). Sophomore Christine Cash carded a 78 (+6) on day one and rounding out the scoring for the Musketeers was freshman Abby Smith with a 9-over 81 (t-32nd).
Saturday morning tee times will be determined later tonight with the first group teeing off at 9 a.m.
