Shane Crutchfield Took Second Place Overall

RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Sophomore Shane Crutchfield (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) shot a final round 73 (73-75-73/221) to take second place individually and lead the Xavier women's golf team to its second consecutive tournament victory by winning the 2014 Rio Verde Invitational by five strokes.
The Musketeers turned in a 299 team score in the final round at Quail Run Golf Course to finish with a three round total of 900 (303-298-299), five strokes better than second place Montana (905) and 14 strokes better than third place Toledo (914).
Crutchfield shot 221 (73-75-73) during the three-day event, finishing two shots behind Montana's Tara Green, who took the individual title.
Junior Abby Smith (Frankfort, Ky./Franklin County High School) fired a final round 74 to finish in a tie for fifth place. Senior Ariel McNair (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) turned in a score of 77, after back-to-back rounds of 75 on the first two days of play, to grab a share of 14th place.
Freshman Grace Howie (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/The Edge School) and senior Christine Cash (Paducah, Ky./Heath High School) carded final rounds of 75 and 78, to finish tied for 24th and tied for 41st, respectively.
The Musketeers will have a couple weeks off before returning to the course. Xavier will participate in the second annual SDSU Farms Invitational, March 24-26, at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
