Fellmeth Leads Women's Golf Over UC at Duramed Invite
March 9, 2009
RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Led by a 2009 breakthrough performance from sophomore Audrey Fellmeth, the Xavier women's golf team bested the University of Cincinnati by a stroke to finish 15th at the Duramed Collegiate Invitational at the par-71, 6,620 yard Quail Run G.C. in Rio Verde, Arizona.
Fellmeth stroked in four birdies on the weekend, improving her score each of the three rounds (80, 78, 73). Her final-round 73 (+2) tied her career-best and the best Xavier round of the 2008-09 season on her way to a tie for 34th place overall (231, +18).
A stroke behind Fellmeth, fellow sophomore Rachel Levi delivered a consistent performance with scores of 78, 75, and 79 for a 19-over par total of 232 (T-38th). Junior Mary Beth McKenna came within inches of draining an albatross in her final round, settling instead for one of the tournament's four eagles. McKenna posted a 74 in her second round to go along with an 83 and 77 to finish a stroke behind Levi in a tie for 40th overall at 20-over.
Freshman Michelle Winkler was dynamite out of the gate with a career-best 75 (+4), but faltered down the stretch to finish 31-over in a tie for 81st. Junior Lindsay Steiner recorded 11 pars in her final round, but was unable to overcome a slow start, finishing 96th at 40-over.
After a spring break in Arizona, the Musketeers will have the following weekend off before traveling to Williamsburg, Va. for the First Mark Bank Women's Intercollegiate on March 21st and 22nd.
