Photos by Willis Glassgow 04/20/2012 Women's Golf - Day One 2012 CAA ChampionshipFriday, April 20 Photos by Jenna Willhoit Tom Elfers was named the head coach of the Xavier women's golf program prior to the 2006-07 campaign, after three seasons as the assistant coach. Elfers retired from teaching math after 30 years at five Cincinnati-area high schools. He turned pro in 1999 and has been golfing on senior tours since. His best result as a pro came in 2000 when he was runner-up at an American Senior Tour event in Humbolt, Texas. That same year, he won the Monday qualifier at the Kroger Senior Classic at the Golf Center at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio. In 2001, he qualified for two Senior events. In August 2003, he won the qualifier at the Allianz Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. A three-time winner of Cincinnati's Metropolitan Championship (1991, 1995 and 1996), he also won the Ohio Mid- Amateur Championship in 1995, 1998 and 2010 and qualified seven times for the US Amateur (1970, 1971, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996). Coach Elfers was inducted into the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame in Sandusky, Ohio on August 6, 2012. He joins 79 other members of the Hall including golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. In addition to his teaching at area high schools, Elfers was active in coaching both golf and basketball. After one year at Miami University, Elfers earned a degree in math from Ohio State in 1972 while earning three letters as a golfer. He then earned his master's in physical education from Miami in 1976. Elfers and his wife Janet live in Loveland. Their son Kyle is 32, and their 29-year-old daugher Mary is a Xavier graduate. |
