Women's Basketball Falls at UC
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier womens basketball team fell 61-56 to the University of Cincinnati in the annual crosstown rivalry on Saturday at UCs Shoemaker Center.
The Musketeers were led by Reetta Piiparis season-high 24 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Freshman Tara Boothe, a graduate of Highlands High School in Northern Kentucky, added 10 for the Musketeers.
Xavier falls to 7-2 on the season. UC won the crosstown game for the seventh straight time and moves to 8-2 on the year. It was the Bearcats 15th consecutive home win.
UC took an early lead in the game, and was up 14-4 at the 14:35 mark in the first half.
Piipari jump started the Musketeers with nine straight points as the Musketeers used a 21-2 run over the next 11 minutes to give Xavier a 25-16 advantage with three and a half minutes left in the first half.
UC closed the gap, but trailed Xavier 30-24 at the break.
The Bearcats used a 9-2 run to open the second period and take a 33-32 lead less than four minutes into the period.
The teams then played through five ties and four lead changes before UC broke a 47-all tie with a 6-0 run to take control of the game at 53-47 with 3:39 left to play.
The Musketeers never got closer than four the rest of the way.
Neither team shot particularly well as the Musketeers shot 40 percent from the field (22-for-55) and UC was just 35.8 from the field (24-for-67).
The 56 points was Xaviers lowest output of the year.
UC was led by Valerie Kings 16 points. Carolyn Alexander and Debbie Merrill added 14 apiece.
Xavier returns to action on Thursday when it head south to play at No. 14 Mississippi State. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
